Travis Hunter, University of Colorado’s new superstar two-way player, has come out hot. He should be prepared to face the demands of a life as a professional footballer. In an interview with CBS Sports at that time, he made some pretty audacious statements. He proclaimed that he would never play football again if he has to be made to play just one position in the NFL. Hunter has his sights set on the next NFL draft. He’s gotten plenty of hype for his dynamic dual-threat prowess.
During the 2024 season, Hunter was featured in Colorado’s offense and showcased his limitless potential and playmaking abilities. He even played a remarkable 713 offensive snaps and 748 defensive snaps. His multi-dimensional skill set catapulted him into career-best statistics. He even managed to be the first NFL player since at least 1976 to have 500+ receiving yards and 4+ interceptions in a season. During last season Hunter netted over 1,152 receiving yards, establishing his dominance to play both wide receiver and cornerback at a high level.
Hunter’s accolades speak volumes about his talent. He went on to win the acclaimed Heisman Trophy. On top of that, he won a slew of other national awards, such as the Walter Camp Award and the Biletnikoff Award for best wide receiver. His outstanding defensive proficiency brought him many accolades on the field, including winning the Bednarik Award. To prove just how much of a two-way player he was, he won the Lott IMPACT Trophy. It was Hunter’s insane versatility though that earned him the 2016 Paul Hornung Award. This victory is his second-straight win in that category.
Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry has lauded Hunter’s extraordinary talents. He has even more faith that Hunter can be successful in the NFL as both. Don’t be fooled by the athleticism in the space—Berry stated wide receiver would be Hunter’s priority position while he enters the league.
Despite this promising outlook from NFL teams, Hunter remains firm in his stance regarding his dual role on the field. He announced that should any club try to force him to commit solely to wide receiver or cornerback, it would be “game over” for him. He’s serious about proving his versatility on the field.
As Hunter nears the 2023 NFL Draft, he’s visited with multiple NFL teams. He even points out that none of them expressed doubt on his ability to play both ways. He agreed, though, that at the end of the day the choice will be up to the teams.
“I just feel very confident in myself,” – Travis Hunter
As he approaches the NFL Draft, Hunter has met with several teams and noted that none have raised concerns about his ability to play both ways. He acknowledged, however, that ultimately the decision lies with the teams.
“It’s not up to me. When they call my name, if they call my name, then we’ll figure that out, but it’s not up to me. That’s what they think about me right now.” – Travis Hunter
