Ethan McLeod was a promising young forward for Macclesfield FC. Tragically in 2016 at the age of 21, he lost his life on the M1, a victim of a motor accident. At the time of the incident, he was on his way back from a National League North fixture versus Bedford Town. His sudden passing has devastated the football world and terribly impacted all who loved him.
McLeod’s football journey thus far started with our very own Wolves Academy, as he joined at the age of seven. His talent and work ethic were undeniable, leading him to signing professional terms with Wolverhampton Wanderers before leaving for college in September 2024. After leaving Wolves, McLeod eventually moved into semi-professional football with Rushall Olympic and Stourbridge before joining Macclesfield FC.
Though McLeod’s career was short-lived, it was certainly history-making and impactful. He took the winning penalty in the 2022-23 season FA Cup Third Round replay win at Peterborough Sports sending Macclesfield through to the First Round proper. What we might have taken for granted during his time on the pitch was to see that brilliance matched by non-stop motivation and professionalism.
The news of McLeod’s passing, announced yesterday, has caused an overwhelmingly emotional reaction and touching tribute to his legacy from all aspects of the football world. In a club statement, Macclesfield FC gave the details of their heartbreak, celebrating McLeod’s talent and character.
