Tragic Death of Former LSU Receiver Kyren Lacy at Age 24

Former LSU football student-athlete Kyren Lacy has died at the age of 24 after being found dead in Houston on Saturday night. His death occurs just weeks after he evaded serious legal charge. These concerns developed following a tragic accident that occurred right before he announced for the NFL draft on December 19. Whether from Lacy’s touching tributes or the outpouring of grief, Lacy’s death has left the LSU community reeling.

Lacy was no stranger to the spotlight, having just recently grabbed headlines when he declared early for the NFL draft. The announcement came just two days after he crashed while in a 2023 Dodge Charger. This crash was on Louisiana Route 20. At the time of the incident, Lacy was reportedly driving recklessly and passing other vehicles illegally when Louisiana State Police say the crash occurred. The driver of a northbound pickup truck, seen in the photo below entering the impact area, swerved to miss a head-on crash with Lacy’s southbound vehicle. This unpredictable move set off a chain reaction that led to another vehicle wreck.

According to similar reports, immediately after the crash Lacy fled on foot from the scene. She didn’t stop to help him or call for assistance, no emergency services. He was charged with felony assault. These were crimes like negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run resulting in death, and reckless operation of a vehicle. After weeks of eluding justice, he finally surrendered to police on January 12 and was bailed out with a $151,000 bond.

Even with these adversities, Lacy lived out a football player’s dream. After starting his collegiate career in-state at Louisiana before transferring to LSU, he played three full seasons at LSU. You remember last season, when he was still up on the field. He recorded 58 receptions for 866 yards and a team high in touchdowns with nine. At one point, he was ranked as high as the No. 6 receiver prospect in the upcoming NFL draft by ESPN’s Mel Kiper.

Unfortunately, Lacy wasn’t able to catch LSU’s recent impressive win over Baylor in the Texas Bowl. His unexpected absence raised alarm bells, and the football community was deeply concerned. His attorney, Matthew Ory, expressed sorrow over Lacy’s passing, stating, “It is with profound sorrow that we confirm the tragic passing of Kyren Lacy. First and foremost, we ask that the public and the media give his family the space and time they need to grieve this unimaginable loss in peace.”

Ory also emphasized the need for a full reconsideration of the investigation into Lacy’s actions in the crash. They say it’s important for the public to know what happened with the investigation. He expressed confidence in Lacy’s innocence, asserting that “we will be demanding a full and transparent review of how this investigation was conducted and why” and that he was “very confident the evidence, after being fully collected and reviewed, would lead to a declination of charges.”

“After Lacy’s death, LSU released a statement of sympathy. We’re saddened to learn of the tragic passing of former LSU Football student-athlete Kyren Lacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones, as well as his former teammates and coaches impacted by his passing.”
