Atlanta Hawks’ star point guard Trae Young is turning the corner in his recovery from a sprained right MCL. Young aggravated the injury in a game on October 29 playing against the Brooklyn Nets. This left him vulnerable to injury and as a consequence, he has missed 15 games. As the NBA’s reigning assists champion, the impact of his absence has certainly been felt as well on the court.
The Hawks released a statement saying Young will be reevaluated in approximately two weeks. This news should come as exciting news to fans who were desperately hoping for his return! His injury originally kept him out until at least mid-December, but recent updates have suggested that he’s trending in a good direction. During a warmup session before a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Young managed to get some shots up, showcasing his determination to return to the lineup.
Young, the 19-year-old averaging 17.8 points and 7.8 assists per game, is the key ingredient that makes Atlanta go. His elusiveness, playmaking ability, and scoring instinct has turned him into the Steelers’ most valuable asset on the offensive side of the ball. The Hawks are waiting with bated breath until his return as they try to establish themselves as the top dog in the east.
Though he’s already missed a ton of time, Young’s positive progression seems to indicate he should be able to return to his teammates sooner rather than later. The reevaluation in two weeks will offer more clarity on what happens next with his condition and his ability to get back on the field. Indeed, the Hawks will have to continue down the road of their season without their superstar point guard. Third, they’re banking on other players to step up and pick up the slack.
