Abdul Carter, the standout defensive end and outside linebacker from Penn State, is making headlines as he opts out of participating in workouts at this week’s NFL scouting combine. Despite leading all FBS players with an impressive 24 tackles for loss in 16 games this season, Carter will sit out the physical drills due to a shoulder injury. The injury, which occurred during Penn State’s victory over Boise State in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals last December, has not deterred his status as a top draft prospect.
Carter's performance this season has been nothing short of remarkable. In addition to his tackles for loss, he recorded 12 sacks and forced two fumbles, establishing himself as a formidable presence on the field. His agents, Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey, confirmed that Carter has been medically cleared to resume training. However, to ensure a complete recovery, he will refrain from participating in workouts at the combine.
While Carter will not take part in the physical activities, he will undergo medical examinations and engage in interviews with prospective teams. This strategic decision underscores the importance of his health and readiness for future opportunities. As one of the most highly rated edge rushers on the draft board, Carter's prospects remain strong. He is ranked as the No. 1 prospect by ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller, No. 2 by Jordan Reid, and also holds the No. 2 spot on Mel Kiper Jr.'s big board.
Looking ahead, Carter is expected to participate in his pro day at Penn State, where his agents anticipate a full recovery and a high-level performance. With his current standing as a top prospect, all eyes will be on Carter as he prepares to showcase his skills to potential NFL teams.
