For Tommy Gainey, 50, that milestone came in an unexpected place. His new home region produced his first PGA Tour Champions title at the Constellation Furyk & Friends event contested at Timuquana Country Club. Gainey proved game after game his exceptional talent and heart during this tournament. He closed with a 6-under 66, good enough for a two-shot margin over his nearest competition.
The final round drama shifted in a major way on the par-5 13th hole. Gainey made a long eagle putt from just off the green, taking the lead for the first time in the tournament. Gainey began the day four strokes back of leader Matt Gogel. He made tremendous shots doing the jump off the field in the second half of the rear nine and caring for fire from Cameron Percy.
Gainey’s path to this win didn’t come easily. During the pandemic, he took down four Monday qualifiers. His tenacity was rewarded when he finally earned a place in the tournament field. His determination would be rewarded as he won the tournament with a final score of 14-under 202.
Gainey couldn’t get that last birdie chance to drop on the 18th. Not to worry—in true champion form, he rolled in a 6-foot par putt that clinched his 2-shot win! He capped off the 2022 tournament in impressive fashion, winning supremacy in a dominating fashion. This victory launched him to 37th position in the Charles Schwab Cup standings.
