Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin sounded optimistic about wide receiver DK Metcalf’s status. daily podcast on Monday’s exciting Dolphins game to come. Having spent recently 24-hours in Baltimore — hospital, not otherwise — Metcalf is eager to go. Tomlin sounds very sure that he’ll be in for the next game.
Metcalf suffered severe abdominal pains in a recent game, forcing medical staff to remove him from their team flight. In the hours following the incident, he was transported to a local hospital. He stayed there overnight and returned to Pittsburgh on Monday. Tomlin did acknowledge that Metcalf sustained a shot to his torso area during the game. For what it’s worth, he’s optimistic that Metcalf should be ready to hit the field against the Dolphins.
“The status of DK Metcalf for Monday’s game appears likely not to be jeopardized,” Tomlin stated, reassuring fans and analysts alike.
Beyond Metcalf’s situation, Tomlin touched on health of other players of the roster. As of now, three Steelers players—Darnell Washington, Andrus Peat, and Malik Harrison—are in the concussion protocol. Defensive backs James Pierre and Keeanu Benton are both nursing injuries suffered during their most recent appearance. Consequently, they should be highly constrained in practice.
The head coach provided an encouraging update on first-round draft pick Derrick Harmon. He’s been inactive for the past two games due to a knee injury. “His practice participation will dictate his availability,” Tomlin said. In a recent Twitter Spaces, he said that Harmon is “really moving in the right direction,” igniting hope for his return.
Kyle Dugger also sat out Sunday after suffering a hand injury. He will have a good shot to play in next week’s game against Miami.
The Steelers will next practice on Thursday. 12 with two practices on Tuesday and one on Thursday, as Coach Tomlin made the team’s usual Wednesday off day the off day.
While there’s a lot of hope for players coming back, not everyone is as optimistic about the team’s chances of making the postseason. That was a brilliant observation by ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith. He cautioned that just because the Steelers handily beat the Ravens at home doesn’t mean they’re in high gear necessarily playoff-primed.
“We just deemed it appropriate to give ourselves another additional 24 hours of recovery this week, so that’s why we’ve taken the approach that we’ve taken this week,” Tomlin explained regarding his decisions around player management.
