Takehiro Tomiyasu has completed and registered his move from Arsenal. The Japanese international and former Sounders defender came to a mutual agreement with the club to end his contract. This decision comes after an extremely difficult year for Tomiyasu. He faced ongoing challenges with injuries and was only able to make six appearances on the field last season.
Tomiyasu was signed by the Gunners from Bologna in 2021. In all Andresen went on to make 84 appearances for the club during his 5-year stint. His play was tremendously affected by injury which caused him to lose a good stretch of minutes. As for Tomiyasu, he remains under the club’s care as he works to recover from his long-term knee injury. When he actually does return to competitive football remains in question.
Contract Termination and Future Prospects
This is why Tomiyasu himself and Arsenal realised the need for a fresh start. Despite having a year remaining on his contract, which included a club option for 2024, the move made sense for both parties. An official statement from Arsenal highlighted the circumstances surrounding the decision:
“Unfortunately, injuries have limited Tomi’s time on the pitch in the past two seasons, with the defender making just one substitute appearance last season. It was therefore mutually agreed to end Tomi’s contract in order for him to start a new chapter in his career.” – Arsenal statement
After with this contract termination, Tomiyasu now once again finds himself looking for new opportunities as he gets back to full health.
Interest from RB Leipzig
Earlier in June, reports suggested that RB Leipzig had improved their chances of signing Tomiyasu. The offer to his current club eventually proved just too expensive for comfort to fit their current budget. It all creates a precarious situation for Tomiyasu’s future as he considers and explores possible moves, cut off while rehabbing his injury.
They have placed his current market value in the region of £25million (€30million). It is unknown if they’ll consider him a good option with his recent health history as clubs surely go after him.
Ongoing Recovery and Future Challenges
We heard yesterday that Tomiyasu is suffering from recurring knee problems. He is not slated to return to action until the end of this year. This aggressive timeline creates significant challenges, especially given his desire to re-enter a highly competitive market. The next few months are going to be make or break for him. He’s passionately focused on getting back into shape and impressing a club willing to invest in his ability.
The football community will have a close eye on Tomiyasu’s next steps. His previous performances at both club and international levels showcased his potential, and there is hope that he can overcome these challenges and return stronger.
