Tom Westley is in tremendous form in the County Championship! During a match against the Bears, he scored his third century in just five innings. The Essex batsman is a talent from the very top drawer as his delightful 124 not out off 234 balls proved. His all-around brilliance provided a firm bedrock for his team’s search for triumphant glory.
Westley brought up his half-century in style, doing so off just 79 balls on a memorable day! He used to get a great hip, big powerful stretch into the off-side. This artful play earned him his 50th run, more than double last year’s total! His innings was a great example of aggressive and brilliant technique working in concert. He played all the textbook shots to perfection too—an exquisite cover drive for four off Ethan Bamber, a near textbook straight drive off Webster.
Having came in with the score on 20 for two, the Essex captain built significant partnerships that led his side’s total. He advanced his own 132 runs for the second wicket with Paul Walter, but made no mistake in contributing massively to his side’s first-innings total. Wesley had earlier shared an 81-run stand with Jordan Cox for the third wicket. These partnerships would be crucial as Essex ended the day on a daunting 350-4.
Westley’s batting was not without its challenges. He put his hands on some tough service. One delivery from Bamber even produced a rare bounce and lift, cramping him enough to miss the ball altogether. His poise and unshakeable concentration saw him not get frazzled and keep going about his business, accumulating runs and building on his innings.
Westley batted throughout the day with prodigious ability. He didn’t just convert his runs into quickfire contributions, rather he showed phenomenal grit and resolve to hold the innings together. He finished his century with a flourish, nonchalantly guiding another off-drive for four off Webster shortly before stumps were called. Wesley ended the day unbeaten on 124. His contribution is critical if Essex are to have a strong say in this match.
