The Tennessee Titans have signed former Washington QB Cam Ward, their first-rounder in this year’s NFL Draft. He’s in line for a four-year rookie deal worth $48.7 million. The contract is accompanied by a fifth-year option and is completely guaranteed. Ward, a former FCS star, is doing the improbable. He’s the first player from that division to be chosen first overall since 1979!
Ward’s ascension to the top of the draft board is quite the story. From Incarnate Word to the Pac-12 He started his collegiate career at Incarnate Word, where he flourished in a two-year stint. Those games were enough for scouts to take notice, and he transferred to Washington State for another two years. He finished off his intercollegiate career with one season at Miami. During the last five-year period, Ward blossomed into arguably the best quarterback in the country. After all, he started out as a zero-star recruit right out of high school.
During contract negotiations, Ward came across as a savvy businessman. His sense of his worth was off the charts. Though he hadn’t finalised the deal, he participated in rookie minicamp and OTAs, working alongside the rookies and veterans. This speaks to his deep desire and dedication to getting up to speed with the team’s system.
The Titans’ coaching staff apparently believes that Ward can develop into a dangerous starting option. Head coach Brian Callahan was confident the rookie would succeed in that regard.
“It’s the leadership ability and the way he’s able to make those around him better.” – Titans coach Brian Callahan
Ward joins a crowded QB room as he’ll compete alongside veterans Kyle Allen, Tim Boyle and Will Levis. Of course this environment is going to help him grow as a player, making that all important jump from college football to the NFL.
The Titans make the final preparations before heading out to offshore boats during the 2019 season. All eyes will be on Ward as he dives into this thrilling new chapter of his career. Given his uncommon experience and diverse toolbox, the franchise is optimistic that he can help them thrive over the next several years.
