Titans Weigh Options Amidst Quarterback Concerns in NFL Draft

Four NFL Nation reporters recently conducted a comprehensive poll among NFL executives, coaches, and scouts to determine the strategic direction of the upcoming draft. The primary question revolved around whether the top pick should be a quarterback or another position. As the results came in, it became clear that opinions vary widely across the league.

Out of the nine respondents, three favored selecting a quarterback, four preferred another position, and two remained undecided. The quality of the current quarterback class was the most significant concern among those polled. With elite pass rushers consistently adapting to the NFL more swiftly than rookies at other positions, many argue that Abdul Carter's value at the top of the board is unmatched.

The Tennessee Titans find themselves in a critical position as they hold the top pick in the draft. Last season, the Titans ranked 31st in QBR, struggling significantly around quarterbacks Will Levis and Mason Rudolph. The team's offensive protection woes were apparent as they placed 27th in pass block win rate at 56.1%. This compromised their ability to provide their quarterbacks with a fair chance to perform.

"They can't put these rookies behind that offensive line and expect them to succeed. The Titans' protection was so bad their quarterbacks had no chance. They have to build the roster up before they add a quarterback." – An NFC scout

Tennessee's statistics reveal further challenges. They ranked 21st in run defense, allowing 4.5 yards per carry, and 25th in defensive pressure rate at 29.0%. Their turnover margin tied for 30th at minus-16, contributing to a disappointing 3-14 record for the season. Evaluators indicated that the Titans lack true game-altering players who can elevate their current roster.

"You don't want to find yourself making the first pick often," – An AFC assistant coach

Despite these challenges, some believe the Titans should retain their top pick and select a quarterback such as Cam Ward. His experience, arm talent, and decision-making have been highlighted by scouts.

"The experience, arm talent, decision-making… I think he has a nice package." – An AFC area scout

However, concerns remain about Ward's tendency to take risks, which might not translate well at the professional level.

"The thing that scares me with [Ward] is some of the risks he does take… you can't do that at this level," – An AFC coach

Some evaluators suggest that trading the top pick might be a more strategic move for the Titans to acquire additional picks and strengthen their overall roster.

"They want more picks, so I think they'd come off that first pick." – An AFC scout

In contrast, others argue that selecting a quarterback could be crucial for future success.

"You have to make it count and get your quarterback. I think that's what the Titans will do. Keep the top pick and draft Cam Ward." – Turron Davenport (paraphrasing an AFC assistant coach)

Abdul Carter emerges as a strong candidate for consideration. His defined skill set and potential for immediate impact make him a compelling choice.

"Carter is everything you want in a prospect — highest grade on the board with a very specific, defined path into your lineup. You know exactly what he is, how you'll project him," – An NFC general manager
