The Tennessee Titans have put day one of their quarterback competition in the books. In one of his initial actions as head coach, Brian Callahan decided to name Will Levis as the new starting QB. This decision opens the floodgates to a heavyweight competition between Levis and new rookie Cam Ward. Ward is a franchise caliber quarterback. He was the unanimous choice of Titans management with the first pick overall in this year’s draft.
Levis worked intensely with personal QB coach Jordan Palmer out in California over the offseason. Prioritizing the personal Callahan made a point to hone in on especially key areas that Callahan himself highlighted in last season’s exit interviews. Callahan was quick to point out that it’s Levis’ job to lose for the time being. He thinks it’s too soon to announce a clear winner heading into next season, as the process and competition are still evolving and developing.
Callahan said that reps are pretty split between Will Levis and Cam Ward. To this day we are still living through Phase 2 of our offseason programming. That means that each of the two quarterbacks will have plenty of chances to showcase what they can do in practice. As the team enters their next OTAs and then the start of training camp, they’ll get to some 7-on-7s. Callahan hopes to affect the way they plan shooting and analyze playing time over this stretch.
In Calgary, Cam Ward is adjusting to new teammates and diving headfirst into Callahan’s playbook. So far, he’s been generating a modest wave of accolades from influential cultural figures. Alabama head coach Nick Saban said Ward was a great pick, adding that Ward will be a “great start” for the Titans organization. Callahan remains cautious about naming Ward the starter too soon, emphasizing that there is significant work to be done over the next three months.
Player Development Producer Callahan’s main point was that young players need to look forward. He thinks this attitude is vital for steering both QBs through this critical stage of their evolution. He noticed that Levis and Ward are masterful at working the competition process. This positive competition might just pay dividends for the organization in the long run.
Nashville’s Tennessee Titans get ready for their first game against the Denver Broncos. At the same time, Callahan thinks back to the dismal 3-14 campaign of a year ago. His priority is creating the most competitive environment possible with Levis and Ward pushing each other to continue developing their craft and raising their games.
