Titans Part Ways with Sack Leader Harold Landry III in Strategic Cap Move

The Tennessee Titans have released outside linebacker Harold Landry III, a key player in their defensive lineup, to make significant cap space. Landry, who was drafted by the Titans in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, has been a vital part of Tennessee's defense for several years. The decision comes as the team looks to restructure and optimize its roster ahead of the upcoming draft, where they hold the No.1 pick.

Landry's performance on the field has been commendable, with his consistent ability to deliver sacks being a highlight. Last season marked his third consecutive year with at least nine sacks, including a career-high 12 in 2021. In 2023, he returned from a torn ACL suffered in the previous preseason and finished second on the team with 10.5 sacks. He led all Titans linebackers by playing 83.1% of defensive snaps.

The release of Landry not only marks the end of his tenure with the Titans but also the departure of the last member of Tennessee's 2018 draft class from the roster. Despite a lucrative five-year, $87 million contract signed in 2022, Landry's injury setbacks and the need for financial flexibility led to this decision.

The Titans utilized a rotation featuring Landry alongside outside linebackers Arden Key and Jaylen Harrell, as well as defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day. This group played outside of interior defensive stalwarts Jeffery Simmons and T'Vondre Sweat. However, with Landry now a free agent, Tennessee may look to reconfigure this setup.

Financially, releasing Landry saves the Titans $10.9 million in cap space. This figure could increase to $17.5 million if the team designates his release as a post-June 1 move. Earlier efforts to trade Landry during the combine did not materialize, which ultimately led to his release.

In their pursuit of new talent, the Titans hosted outside linebacker Abdul Carter at their facility on Thursday. As they prepare for the draft with the top pick in hand, this move signals a strategic shift in their defensive strategy.
