The Tennessee Titans have fired head coach Brian Callahan just six games into his second season, following a series of disappointing performances. It was a hard fall for the team that had opened the season with a 1-5 start. This abysmal showing led management to look for a new strategy. Senior offensive assistant Mike McCoy will be interim coach. The historically beleaguered franchise is hellbent on changing its legacy.
Callahan’s time with the Titans has been one of futility evidenced by a 4-19 record to date. His tenure as head coach became one of the worst in Titans/Houston Oilers franchise history. This puts only Ken Whisenhunt’s record lower on the list. The team’s continued lack of offensive production is most alarming. The Titans stand at 83 total points through six games, putting them on pace for the lackluster low of just 220 overall for 1985.
The Titans dropped a messy and frustrating 20-10 game to the Las Vegas Raiders. Unfortunately for Callahan, this loss was the last straw. Fans made their anger known on the field, booing the team during games and chanting “Fire Callahan” in protests as frustrations boiled over. This added up to his announcement a month ago that he would give up playcalling duties and turn them over to quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree.
Callahan’s first season with the Titans was especially brutal, ending with a 3-14 record. That team’s disastrous finish earned them the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s 2024 NFL Draft. In that top pick, they chose quarterback Cam Ward. He got his first victory of the season last week, a hard-fought 22-21 victory against the Arizona Cardinals. This win did not ease the growing storm clouds surrounding him.
After an equally disheartening 26-0 loss to the Houston Texans in Week 4, things really started to get hot. That contest featured two squads that were both looking for their first victory. Callahan’s frustrations were evident during a previous match against the Indianapolis Colts, where he remarked, “If we’re keeping it a buck right now, we’re ass,” highlighting his dissatisfaction with the team’s performance.
Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk surprised many when she hired Callahan in 2023 to replace former head coach Mike Vrabel. As the season wore on, it became apparent that the organization’s success was starting to plateau. The management understood this drop in performance and made this particularly difficult decision on the consideration of having to change.
In a statement about the firing, a team representative said, “We just felt like this was the right time to make a change. We’re not seeing enough growth from this football team.”
McCoy has now taken over as the interim head coach. In addition, fans and analysts alike are intrigued to see how this transition affects the Titans’ performance down the stretch. The nonprofit smarts on the verge that McCoy can pump some existence into the team and assist turn around what has been a dismal start to the season.
