The Tennessee Titans are actively exploring strategies to secure their future as they gear up for a new stadium opening in 2027. With an ambitious plan to make 30 draft picks over the next three years, the team is considering trading back from their top overall pick in the upcoming draft. This move could bolster their draft capital, allowing them to acquire 12 picks within the top 100, thereby strengthening their roster through the draft process.
Chad Brinker, the Titans' president of football operations, emphasizes the team's commitment to evaluating all options regarding the number one pick. The "Draft, Develop, Retain" mission lies at the heart of Brinker's strategy, focusing on accumulating draft picks to build a formidable team. Currently, the Titans possess only two picks in the draft, holding the No. 1 and No. 35 slots, which places them at a crossroads between selecting a top quarterback or trading down for additional picks.
"We're going to look at all avenues as far as that number one pick," said Chad Brinker.
The Titans' need for a quarterback is pressing, with only Will Levis under contract. Trading down from the top pick could mean forfeiting the opportunity to secure one of the top two quarterback prospects. However, trusting in their new general manager, Mike Borgonzi, the Titans aim to steer back on track after enduring a challenging 3-14 season.
Borgonzi, who has a rich background with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he was part of identifying Patrick Mahomes' exceptional talent early on, now has the authority over free agency and the draft process. Brinker retains tiebreaking authority, ensuring strategic alignment in crucial decisions. The Titans plan to attend the East-West Shrine Bowl and the Senior Bowl to thoroughly evaluate top prospects.
"The quarterback is the most important position, arguably in sports," noted Mike Borgonzi.
The importance of securing a franchise quarterback cannot be overstated, as Borgonzi and his team remain relentless in their pursuit of finding the right fit for the Titans' future. Despite only being in his role for a few days, Borgonzi has already begun receiving congratulatory messages from league peers, indicating confidence in his ability to navigate this critical period for the Titans.
"We're going to be relentless attacking this until we find the answer," Borgonzi stated.
"Draft picks are our biggest form of currency, so when there's opportunities to trade back to collect more picks, we're going to do that," he added.
