Anthony Edwards, a key player for the Minnesota Timberwolves, sustained a hamstring injury during the team’s home opener against the Indiana Pacers on Sunday night. The injury happened just two minutes into the first quarter when he fell awkwardly after attempting a contested layup in traffic. With 3:07 elapsed in the game, Edwards took hard contact and subsequently looked for a foul call, which was not granted.
In the aftermath of the violent incident, the Timberwolves made a public announcement that Edwards would not be returning to the game. His abrupt departure raised concerns among supporters and players alike. That anxiety was compounded by his importance as a three-time All-Star. Earlier this season, Edwards showcased his skills by scoring 41 points in 39 minutes during the season opener against the Portland Trail Blazers.
As they get ready to face Portland on Wednesday night, Edwards’ status is uncertain. This cloud of uncertainty has only been exacerbated by the dramatic undercurrent of the team as they seek to establish positives early in this young season. Over the course of his career, Edwards has shown incredible durability, suiting up for 426 of 445 possible games—including playoffs—played.
His injury is the worst that could happen to the Timberwolves. Not only do the Magic rely on his scoring and playmaking abilities. As the team continues to get used to the demands of the season, losing a player of Edwards’ caliber will undoubtedly test their depth and grit in the matches to come.
