Tiger Woods announced on Saturday that he was recovering from lumbar disk replacement surgery performed on Oct. 11, 2025. The surgery was intended to address years of trouble with his lower back, a longstanding problem for the legendary golfer. Woods recently went under the knife—just the latest in a long list of surgeries that have plagued him over the years. Only last September, he underwent surgery to fix a nerve impingement in his lower back.
In a post breaking the news on social media, Woods revealed some of the difficulties he’s had with his health in recent years. He’s been kept out of PGA Tour events this year. With this new setback, his path back to competitive golf becomes even more challenging. In March, he incurred a torn left Achilles tendon, further complicating his difficulties.
I experienced debilitating pain and loss of mobility in my back. In order to learn what was the matter, I relied on doctors and surgeons for testing. That’s how I ended up having to get this surgery recently,” said Woods.
“The scans determined that I had a collapsed disc in L4/5, disc fragments and a compromised spinal canal,” he added. When confronted with these results, Woods was forced to choose, and chose surgery.
“I opted to have my disc replaced yesterday, and I already know I made a good decision for my health and my back,” he expressed after the procedure.
Woods’ history with back surgeries is extensive. At the age of 26, he has had five surgeries to take care of different issues with his spine. Each operation has been a crucial step in his ongoing battle to regain full mobility and return to the sport he loves.
As he starts his recovery from this latest surgical procedure, Woods is optimistic about a return to competitive golf. His commitment to rehabilitation will be important as he treads the challenges of recovery.
