Tiger Woods’ TGL Debut Outshines NBA Games with Over 1 Million Viewers

Tiger Woods' debut in the TGL drew significant attention, captivating over 1 million viewers and surpassing NBA games broadcasted on the same night. The TGL match, featuring Woods' Jupiter Links Golf Club, aired on January 7, peaking at 1.13 million viewers between 8:30 and 8:45 p.m. ET. This marked an impressive 9 percent increase from the league's first match the previous week. Despite the strong viewership, Woods' team suffered a 12-1 defeat to the Los Angeles Golf Club.

The TGL, which stands for The Golf League, is gaining traction with its inaugural season running through March 4. The playoffs are scheduled to take place later in March, promising more exciting matchups. In contrast, the Cavaliers-Pacers game on TNT attracted 956,000 viewers, and the Nuggets-Mavericks game drew 853,000 viewers on the same network. These numbers highlight TGL's growing popularity as it managed to outperform these NBA games.

Tiger Woods' presence in the TGL has given the time slot a notable boost for ESPN. In comparison, Duke's dominant performance against Miami in a men's basketball game on ESPN garnered 587,000 viewers, while the Syracuse-Pitt men's basketball game during the same period last year had 566,000 viewers. The TGL continues to draw attention, as evidenced by Bay Golf Club's commanding 9-2 victory over New York Golf Club on January 7, which attracted nearly a million viewers.

Looking ahead, golf enthusiasts can anticipate an exciting matchup when Woods' team faces Boston Common Golf in Rory McIlroy's team debut on January 27. This event is expected to draw substantial interest as two of golf's most iconic figures compete in the nascent league.
