Few golf minds are as sharp or more experienced than Tiger Woods, the legendary 15-time major champ recently shared his thoughts. The much-anticipated 125th U.S. Open begins this Thursday at Oakmont Country Club, just outside of Pittsburgh. Though Woods will likely be out of this year’s tournament due to continued health issues, he remains a central figure in the world of golf. He shares some priceless advice, honed from his 30-year tenure at this legendary house of rock.
Woods, now 49, has had multiple injuries and surgeries throughout his career. He had surgery on March 11 to repair a ruptured left Achilles tendon. It was yet another blow for Woods—he’d just had his sixth back surgery in September 2023. He played his most recent competitive round at last July’s 2024 Open Championship. Sadly, he didn’t get the cut. On top of that, he’s still dealing with the repercussions from a 2021 car crash.
In one of these video tutorials, which Woods then released on Instagram, he gave players helpful suggestions for making efficient play through Oakmont’s punishing design. He relied, perhaps subconsciously, on his previous U.S. Open victories, having won there in 2000, 2002, and 2008. He stressed that strategy and precision are key for coming out on top of the course.
The implication is that the golf course is large, sure, but it’s just there is no way around it. In order to put a golf ball where you want it, Woods went on to clarify. The course prioritizes longer hitters with its elevations and undulations.
He further elaborated on the significance of approach shots, saying, “It just helps so much to be coming with shorter iron, to be able to sock the ball. It’s about missing the ball on correct spots … because if you don’t, it’s horrible!”
These observations from Woods’ highlight his deep knowledge of the game. Yet they expose his competitive brilliance at the highest strategic levels. He won’t be teeing off at this year’s tournament. Even eight years later, his influence is deeply felt among the world of golf.
With the 125th U.S. Open around the corner, Woods’ sentiments are a great memory of his long lasting impact on the game of golf. His accomplishments and experience bring invaluable perspective to our members and fans. Between them, they prepare to ride into what should be yet another exciting chapter in the long history of their sport.
