The Oklahoma City Thunder are the talk of this NBA season! At one point during their jaw-dropping 24-1 start, they even had the best point differential on record over any 82-game stretch in league history. This incredible milestone is a testament to the team’s historic on-court success. In doing so, it helps to further solidify their status as perhaps the league’s most dangerous contender.
The Thunder’s physicality was more on display in their recent game against the Phoenix Suns. They didn’t just win though, they clinched an emphatic victory in the NBA Cup quarterfinals 138-89. In the midst of their game, they established a staggering 41-point lead. In the fourth quarter, that lead ballooned to an unbelievable 53 points! This victory is a snapshot of their unselfish team ball and unwavering commitment to being the best.
Chet Holmgren, one of the team’s standout players, contributed significantly to the win with 24 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. His performance has been essential to the Thunder’s success this season. They’ve been comparatively dominant, having outscored their opponents by an astounding average of 17.4 ppg.
Gilgeous-Alexander was that good, too, putting up 28 points in only 27 minutes. Sexton’s presence on the floor late in the game underscored Oklahoma City’s commitment to defending their lead. They were not going to go out without a bang.
The Thunder also obliterated old franchise records in an amazing 16-game leap. This stunning accomplishment cements their place as probably the most buzzworthy, can’t-miss crew! Their current record of 72-10 over their last 82 regular-season games reflects a consistent level of play that few teams can match. The team has outscored their opponents by an astounding 1,189 points over this stretch, showcasing their offensive domination.
Holmgren was clear that this effort really needed to be outward-looking and focused on the present, not mired in history or getting distracted by potential down the road.
“It continues with the respect we have for each other and the enjoyment that we have doing this together.” – Chet Holmgren
Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault reiterated the importance of staying focused internally if the team is to continue its upward trajectory.
“It’s hard to play with leads. It’s hard not to get distracted by the score.” – Mark Daigneault
Daigneault says he’s not worried about them getting too big for their breeches. The Thunder’s sustained devotion and intent have been an underappreciated part of their strategy as they look ahead.
Jalen Williams wrote about the shift in mentality on the team where winning is still an exciting thing.
“Winning is never boring. There was a time where some players on our team were getting blown out.” – Jalen Williams
With the season winding down, Oklahoma City is dashing past another record-setting pace. They’re on pace to obliterate their own record of a plus-12.9 average point differential from last year. It’s because they share an incredible, almost unfair cocktail of talent, strategy and teamwork. With these strengths, they are primed for a potentially historic season!
