Surrey provided a stern test, making 243 runs a competitive target as they posted 243-7 from their 33 overs. Somerset met the moment, showing resourcefulness and depth. Heather Knight completely took control of the match for Somerset, smashing an incredible 64 runs. Meanwhile, tracked Knight’s development, Emma Corney proved an invaluable presence with a fabulous opening partnership of 122 with Knight. Fran Wilson contributed to the growing momentum with an undefeated 36 runs. In a nail-biting finish Somerset smashed 18 runs off the final over to win the game. Georgia Davis and Hannah Baker advanced, tying the score with just one ball remaining, winning the championship! Unfortunately for Davis, she was run out while trying to get the one needed for victory.
Suzie Bates shone for Durham in their fixture against Essex, smashing 93*. Her efforts powered Durham to a comprehensive nine-wicket win. It was a perfect exhibition of teamwork and consistency by the team, chasing down the total without losing too many wickets.
Lancashire stole the show in a stunning performance of batting against The Blaze. Her opening partner Emma Lamb impressed, as her brilliant 130 not out helped the team to a respectable total. Her exceptional performance helped carry her side to an eight-wicket win, with her team chasing down a target of 235 runs. Going top to support her in the effort were Katie Mack and Seren Smale, both strong contributors to take the edge and provide a comfortable victory.
The day’s matches not only proved once again how brilliant this day one was, on a personal as well as a competitive note. Each team showing tenacity and heart, resulting in dramatic conclusions that had fans biting their nails.
