At 54, Thomas Bjorn won the Stifel Charity Classic. This stunning triumph is his second triumph of 2018 on the PGA Tour Champions. More than just his historic performance, this victory marks an important moment. In June, he joined forces with his compatriot Darren Clarke to claim victory in the American Family Insurance Championship in Madison, Wisconsin earlier this year.
In that final round at Norwood Hills Country Club, Bjorn put forth a historic performance. He capped it off with a closing 4-under 67. And of course, he played fabulously overall during the tournament. In doing so, he equaled Australian golfer Cameron Percy for the lowest opening 54-hole score at 12-under 201.
In a thrilling sudden death playoff to decide the winner, Bjorn performed like a champion with remarkable poise under fire. He holed a blinding 35-foot birdie putt on first extra hole–the playoff began at No. This stunning turn and finish wrapped up his win and showed his incredible ability to perform under pressure. This win is particularly special for Bjorn. It is his first individual title on the PGA Tour Champions and stamps his individuality in the often-comfy competitive circuit.
So far, Bjorn’s journey in professional golf has been compelling. Transitioning to the 50-and-over tour has allowed him to continue showcasing his talent and competitiveness, as evidenced by his successful year thus far. With his victory at the Stifel Charity Classic, he has further established himself as a formidable contender in senior professional golf.
