The Rising Stars and Established Veterans in NBA Free Agency

With the NBA postseason coming to a close, teams are taking stock of their rosters and the free agent market. Success stories on that front are Keon Ellis (NCAA), Al Horford (NCAA), Chris Boucher (NCAA), and Malik Beasley (NCAA). Notable others include Myles Turner, Naz Reid, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Dennis Schroder. All four players had a major influence on their respective teams this most recently completed season. They put their talents and market worth on display as they approach the free agency pool.

Keon Ellis stood out last season, setting a career high of 8.3 PPG. Even more impressive was his shooting, as he made 43% of his three-point tries. On average, he was firing off 5.9 three-point attempts per 36 minutes. Ellis put together a cracker of a defensive display. Defensively, he posted a dazzling mark of 2.2 steals and 1.2 blocks per 36 minutes. The Sacramento Kings have a team option on him, something that could make all the difference in their calculus.

Al Horford is still one of the most important players on the Boston Celtics, capable of switching 1-5 on defense and spacing the floor on offense. It goes without saying that approaching his 39th birthday, Horford’s experience and leadership will be a crucial asset for the team. That’s about to change as he will be headed into the free agency waters as an unrestricted free agent. Reflecting on the recent playoff exit against the New York Knicks, Horford stated, “For me, it’s just too soon to talk about that. I’m going to take some time here with my wife, with my kids, and just that. It hasn’t even been a day. So, there’s still a lot for me to process.”

Chris Boucher had a noteworthy season, averaging double-figure scoring for the second time in his career while playing just 17.2 minutes per game (MPG). He plays with excellent efficiency, despite only short spurts of playing time. With his scoring potential, he’s sure to be a desirable target for teams seeking depth.

He had an impressive year ultimately, despite failing to reach the 90% threshold, finishing at 87% on the nose. His consistency remains his greatest asset as he looks into options on the open market.

Myles Turner had a career year, shooting 37% from deep. He converted teams’ jaws dropping with an incredible .600 mark from two-point range. Turner’s ability to stretch the floor as a big man enhances his value in today’s NBA.

One of the pleasant surprises for the Timberwolves was Naz Reid, who posted career bests in points, rebounds and assists per game during the 2022-23 season. Whatever his tracker meaning, his further development will be one to watch for teams looking to add depth to their frontcourt.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker inserted himself into the mix as the Minnesota Timberwolves’ third guard, taking on a career-high 25.3 MPG. He made 38% from beyond the arc, proving that he can be a consistent deep threat and score in a variety of ways as a sixth man.

Dennis Schroder faced the hoop or not finding his place in the Golden State Warriors’ motion-heavy offense last season. At the same time, questions about his future role have started to bubble to the surface.

While teams evaluate these players’ performances and potential contributions, scouts are holding their breath. One scout commented on Al Horford’s significance to the Celtics: “With how the playoffs have gone, he’s cemented his place there. They just don’t have a replacement for him.” Meanwhile, another scout noted about Keon Ellis: “The best thing that happens to him is if they sign-and-trade him.”
