Harmanpreet Kaur, born in Moga, India, has emerged as a significant figure in women’s cricket, currently serving as the captain of India’s national team. Her path to stardom started with her first coach, Kamaldeesh Singh Sodhi, who saw her talent and pushed her in the right direction at a young age. Yadwinder, Kamaldeesh’s son, was the first one to recognize Kaur’s exceptional talent. He soon became her mentor, taking her under his wing. This unassuming mentorship began the long, almost implausible road to her success in the sport.
Kaur’s name became synonymous with excellence during the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup, when she scored a remarkable 171 runs against Australia. Her performance was a master class in her outrageous talent. It represented a turning point for her squad, as she took the reigns to guide her team in a must-win matchup. Her prowess and poise under pressure have made her a role model for budding athletes in India and around the world.
Kaur’s cricketing journey formally began on May 13, 2010. She hit the front pages when she played in the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 semi-final match against Australia. The first-ever cricket match in Saint Lucia was held on the Beausjour Cricket Ground in Gros Islet. In this iconic game, Kaur was able to build a partnership with Poonam Raut, introducing her talent to the global stage.
Today, Kaur’s accomplishments are still making headlines across television and social media platforms. BBC’s cricket program “Stumped,” hosted by Alison Mitchell, chronicles her experience on the pitch. It provides an important perspective on her life as a player and leader. The new program includes some really engaging conversations with high-profile guests including NPR’s Jim Maxwell and Accenture’s Sunil Gupta. It features fellow cricketer Punam Raut, an indispensable part of the 2017 India World Cup finalist squad!
