The Women’s Super League (WSL) is gearing up for another season — this one arguably the most anticipated of all time. Chelsea Women are the defending champions, having won the last six seasons in a row. The competition is undeniably stiffening as clubs continue to undertake strategic shifts and deepen their stacked rosters. The absence of multiple key players has been felt this season. At the same time, fresh coaches come aboard, creating one of the most exciting seasons overall!
The season starts with Chelsea Women as clear favourites, having gone league unbeaten since May 2024. Without their superstar Sam Kerr, their title defense is in doubt. She has not played since rupturing her ACL in January 2024. Other clubs will be more than ready to take advantage, though, leaving the table poised for an uncertain and wildly competitive campaign.
Chelsea’s Title Defense
Chelsea Women have run roughshod over the WSL in years past, leaving little doubt that their champions on the field, winning six straight league titles. Their strong streak makes them top contenders once again. Even as the team basks in their recent success, it has some major challenges that could soon undermine their relatively new reign.
The most glaring omission is of course Sam Kerr. Her injury and subsequent absence has left a hole in Chelsea’s attacking front line, and her return date is unknown. If the club hopes to keep the winning streak alive, they are going to have to really lean on their other past and present squad members.
For Chelsea, the roster is stacked with several world class players who have shown significant talent and skill this season. Elizabeth Terland is known for her tireless work ethic, while Michelle Agyemang made a name for herself during the summer Euros, impressing fans and critics alike. These incoming freshman and transfer players will be very important in helping the heels as they work through the growing pains of the season.
Rising Stars and New Strategies
Chelsea awaits the start of their title defense, other clubs are already making moves to boost their competitiveness. Bunny Shaw has emerged as the bookmakers’ favorite for the Golden Boot this season, indicating an expectation of high performance. Her impact in front of goal will be crucial if her new club are to achieve their lofty ambitions.
Gareth Taylor is introducing an attacking, possession-based passing game at Liverpool — and it should produce thrilling results. His strategic vision would bring Liverpool to new heights, turning them into a league powerhouse once again. Matt Beard is seemingly set to step into the empty seat at Leicester City after the shock exit of Amandine Miquel. This managerial change likely gives Leicester a new attitude and perspective as they look to climb up the table.
Earlier this summer, fellow English club, the London City Lionesses, grabbed attention with a head-turning recruitment campaign. They’ve certainly added quality to their squad, signing twelve new players including the phenomenal Nikita Parris. On the whole, this aggressive strategy shows their seriousness to compete with the big boys of the league.
The Coaching Landscape
As you may know, the WSL coaching landscape is changing quickly, with many teams introducing new leadership to jumpstart their rosters. Andree Jeglertz, head honcho of Manchester City. Beyond that, he pledges to give his players the tools to succeed and to inspire a newfound competitive edge on the roster. All of us will be watching intently as he leads. City knows they need to return to being one of the best teams in the league.
There’s no question that Jocelyn Precheur has an uphill battle ahead. He’s obviously hell bent on putting together a strong enough team to compete for top prizes. His ability to blend new talent with existing players will be crucial in determining how well the team performs this season.
The WSL is looking forward to a thrilling 2022 season! Chelsea Women will be a key storyline as they look to stay on top of the women’s game with intense challenges from up-and-coming clubs and new tactics loaded throughout the league.
