The Hundred Returns: Stakes Soar and Stokes Sits Out for Fitness Focus

The Hundred is set to make a significant comeback after its initial launch was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. With teams now boasting a collective value exceeding £975 million, the competition has garnered substantial investment through the sale of stakes in its eight franchises. This influx has introduced approximately £520 million into the game, earmarked for distribution across England and Wales. The tournament kicks off on August 5, just a day after the conclusion of England's five-Test series against India.

England Test captain Ben Stokes has announced his decision to sit out this summer's edition of The Hundred. Stokes' withdrawal underscores his commitment to maintaining peak fitness ahead of the Ashes series in Australia, which commences on November 21 in Perth. His absence aligns with England's broader strategy to ensure their players remain in optimal condition for crucial international fixtures.

The latest deadline day signings have brought new excitement to the rosters, highlighted by Australia batter Steve Smith joining the Welsh Fire. This year, teams have been granted the flexibility to recruit one male and one female player through private negotiations rather than relying solely on The Hundred draft process. With 68 remaining spots awaiting selection, these will be decided during the draft scheduled for March 12. A wildcard draft in May will also allow teams to sign standout players from the domestic circuit, adding further dynamism to the competition.

In addition to Stokes' news, The Hundred's defending champions are poised for another thrilling season. Invincibles secured their second consecutive men's championship in 2024, while Spirit triumphed in the women's competition. In a bid to sustain their competitive edge, former Australia women's captain Meg Lanning has joined the two-time winners Oval Invincibles, while England's Nat Sciver-Brunt remains with Trent Rockets.
