Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle has forged an impressive creative alliance between himself and point guard Tyrese Haliburton. In turn, their relationship has evolved and changed to climate change over the years. This collaboration not only highlights Carlisle’s coaching acumen but showcases Haliburton’s emerging talent in the NBA. With a unique understanding and communication style, the duo has transformed the Pacers’ offensive dynamics, leading to impressive results this postseason.
During his time coaching in Dallas, Carlisle learned the value of trusting his point guards. It was his experiences coaching Hall of Famers such as Jason Kidd that translated into his ability to better coach the sophomore Haliburton. He didn’t want to cede control to Kidd, as he eventually did when he hired him for the 2010-11 season. With Haliburton, he’s gone in a completely different direction. As 2022-23 training camp was about to begin, Carlisle told Haliburton that he didn’t want to call plays, anyway. This change really allowed Haliburton to seize control of the game. In return, the Pacers have been handsomely rewarded.
Carlisle’s time in Indiana started with challenges. When he inherited the job for the 2021-22 season, the roster had no trustworthy options at guard. This gap left him no choice but to revert to his former ways. After picking up Haliburton in a mid-season deal with the Sacramento Kings, Carlisle figured he had a new offensive quarterback to cultivate. This trade, a massive package including the talented Domantas Sabonis, has lit the fuse on this dynamic metamorphosis.
Their connection has been one of mutual understanding and natural alignment. Their partnership has grown into a synergistic connection, with each side playing a vital role in the improvement of the Pacers’ offensive renaissance. Earlier this season, Haliburton registered a feat most players can only dream of, averaging a double-double with 20.7 points and 10.4 assists per game. It’s Carlisle’s unshakable faith in Haliburton that has set him up to succeed so greatly on the court.
“When he gave me that nod, that was like the ultimate respect,” – Tyrese Haliburton
Haliburton’s confidence is evident when he plays under Carlisle’s guidance. He’s referred to Carlisle as a “basketball savant.” This is indicative of the tremendous reverence he has for his coach’s encyclopedic understanding of the game. This trust is mutual. Haliburton understands and appreciates Carlisle’s vision.
“That was the ultimate trust that I could get from anybody, because he is such a brilliant basketball mind,” – Tyrese Haliburton
These collective actions taken by Carlisle and Haliburton have contributed to one of the most unlikely turnarounds in NBA history. One last fun stat- the Pacers now average 116.7 points per 100 post season possessions. This dazzling run underlines just how smart and efficient they’ve been on the offensive end. Former player J.J. Barea noted Haliburton’s freedom on the court, stating, “When I see Haliburton playing for Rick, he’s free, man.”
Barea continued by emphasizing how much Haliburton enjoys playing under Carlisle: “He looks so free out there. He looks like he’s enjoying the game. He’s playing at a great pace and with confidence. I think Rick got Haliburton’s confidence to be as high as it could be.”
Rick Carlisle’s evolution as a coach is evident in his willingness to adapt his strategies based on his players’ needs. He recalls learning valuable lessons from his first year in Dallas coaching Kidd: “What I learned my first year in Dallas was to give J-Kidd the ball and get out of the way, let him run the show, let him run the team.”
This aversion to confrontation translated into his administration’s dealings with Haliburton. He asserted more authority right from the jump than he did with Kidd. Carlisle remarked on this change in approach: “Tyrese, very similar situation, but didn’t take half a season to figure it out.”
Rick Carlisle & Tyrese Haliburton
As members of the Pacers organization, Carlisle and Haliburton are continuing to develop their craft under Indy’s umbrella. For others, the way their relationship clicks feels like a dream come true. Basketball analyst Haralabos Voulgaris noted their compatibility: “Rick, at this stage of his career in particular, and Haliburton, just seem to be a perfect marriage.”
