Haliburton learned this last season when he joined the team in February after being acquired from the Sacramento Kings in a mid-season trade. Since then, he and his fellow newcomers have created a beautiful chemistry together.
Looking back on the first stages of his career, Haliburton continued. To judge his performance, he would watch film of his points and assists. With Carlisle as his mentor, he has learned a lot more about what it truly means to lead an offense. Haliburton said, “When he gave me that head nod, I felt like I’d received the highest honor. Even after all this time, he didn’t give that kind of freedom to Jason Kidd until halfway through his third season coaching him in Dallas. The similarities between Haliburton and Doncic were not lost on Carlisle, who remarked, “Tyrese, very similar situation, but didn’t take half a season to figure it out.”
The synergy between Carlisle and Haliburton has led to some ingenious offensive sets that play to Haliburton’s rare skill set. Chad Buchanan, then–general manager of the Pacers, called Tyrese’s creativity impressive. Like just if there was a really rudimentary structure, you saw so many glimpses of his ability to create and make plays. This inventive thinking has helped lay the foundation for an explosive offensive identity for the Pacers.
Beyond their working relationship, Carlisle took steps to establish a connection with Haliburton outside of the game. After acquiring him, he set up a team dinner between Haliburton and their other new players to build team chemistry. This beautiful gesture underscored Carlisle’s deep conviction that inner bonds and connections make better performers on the court.
