The Dynamic Duo: Rick Carlisle and Tyrese Haliburton Transform Pacers’ Offense

Rick Carlisle, the new head coach of the Indiana Pacers, has demonstrated incredible flexibility over his career. He and All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton have developed a formidable chemistry. Since returning to the Pacers in the 2021-22 season, Carlisle has constructed an offensive system that puts Haliburton’s talent on full display. Their fiery partnership shows a world of promise on and off the court. Needless to say, this collaboration has stepped Haliburton’s level up tremendously. This change has helped turned the Pacers into the most dangerous offensive team in the playoffs so far with 116.7 offensive points per 100 possessions in the playoffs.

Of course, Carlisle’s ability to maximize his and the league’s talent is the defining characteristic of his coaching career. He’s taken the lessons from history to heart. Now, he gives his players more freedom to dictate the flow of the game instead of dictating everything through his strategies. His great teaching method has worked wonders for the young and explosive Haliburton, as he’s flourished and drawn comparisons to past greats with Carlisle’s tutelage. Haliburton learned this last season when he joined the team in February after being acquired from the Sacramento Kings in a mid-season trade. Since then, he and his fellow newcomers have created a beautiful chemistry together.

Looking back on the first stages of his career, Haliburton continued. To judge his performance, he would watch film of his points and assists. With Carlisle as his mentor, he has learned a lot more about what it truly means to lead an offense. Haliburton said, “When he gave me that head nod, I felt like I’d received the highest honor. He credited the trust that Carlisle had placed in him.

Carlisle’s track record with point guards come into play here, as does his long, abiding faith in Haliburton. Even after all this time, he didn’t give that kind of freedom to Jason Kidd until halfway through his third season coaching him in Dallas. This experience heavily influenced the way he approached things with Haliburton. He knew the importance of allowing a great player the freedom to make all-important decisions on the court without outside meddling.

As training camp neared for the 2022-23 season, Carlisle communicated a wish to reduce his responsibilities of calling plays. He thought giving Haliburton the reins would be much more beneficial than the standard coaching approach. This choice showed Carlisle’s recognition of the necessity of a smart point guard to help form the natural fray that could facilitate an attractive team melody.

The same roster challenges that Carlisle encountered in Indiana limited his tactical options when he first came in. Without a sturdy protector from the beginning, he clutched to atavistic reflexes. Getting Haliburton really shifted the dynamics of the whole team’s offense. His system is just the best way to maximize the talent that he has,” said Haralabos Voulgaris, a powerful figure in basketball analytics. He recognizes that the game is changing. He understands more than most that he has to always improve, learn, adjust and grow.

It was a confidence booster for Haliburton himself, as he came to understand just how much trust the organization had in him. In response, Carlisle very confidently opened the keys to the offense up to him. He approached him the same way he did with Luka Doncic when he was in Dallas. The similarities between Haliburton and Doncic were not lost on Carlisle, who remarked, “Tyrese, very similar situation, but didn’t take half a season to figure it out.”

The synergy between Carlisle and Haliburton has led to some ingenious offensive sets that play to Haliburton’s rare skill set. Chad Buchanan, then–general manager of the Pacers, called Tyrese’s creativity impressive. Like just if there was a really rudimentary structure, you saw so many glimpses of his ability to create and make plays. This inventive thinking has helped lay the foundation for an explosive offensive identity for the Pacers.

Beyond their working relationship, Carlisle took steps to establish a connection with Haliburton outside of the game. After acquiring him, he set up a team dinner between Haliburton and their other new players to build team chemistry. This beautiful gesture underscored Carlisle’s deep conviction that inner bonds and connections make better performers on the court.

Rick Carlisle’s tenure as head coach represents a dramatic shift in his coaching philosophy, especially when it comes to utilizing point guards. As evidenced with star players like Kidd, his approach usually led to mixed results. His pairing with Haliburton paints a considerably rosier picture. The transformation Haliburton has undergone under Carlisle is a testament to both players’ commitment to growth and excellence.

Haliburton has been effusive in his praise of Carlisle’s basketball intelligence, going so far as to refer to him as a “basketball savant.” This recognition highlights the mutual deference that lies between them and helps lay a foundation for future achievements as partners.

As they push deeper into the postseason, Carlisle and Haliburton both know that it’s just a small part of unlocking their full offensive potential. Their collaborative work has set the Pacers up as one of the few teams who can consistently raise their game to a higher level when it matters most.
