Texans Revamp Wide Receiver Room Ahead of New Season

The Houston Texans are undergoing a significant transformation in their wide receiver corps as they prepare for the upcoming season. What departures and arrivals have shaped the Texans thus far. Now, they’re preparing to depend on the NFL Draft to improve their receiving corps even further. Their management is thrilled with their recent signings, particularly Miami’s Braxton Berrios and Jacksonville’s Christian Kirk. They know what’s coming after the departure of Stefon Diggs in free agency.

His brother Stefon Diggs was a massive cog in Houston’s offensive machine. A few weeks after the Texans chose not to retain him, he signed a three-year deal with the New England Patriots, potentially worth up to $69 million. His absence leaves a massive hole on Cincinnati’s roster. This is particularly poignant with Robert Woods, who was not re-signed over the course of the offseason, ranking top seven on the team in receiving yards. Consequently, the Texans are trying to couture a different, better look wide receiver room.

Since then, the Texans have acquired Christian Kirk, from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Kirk accumulated a tremendous 1,108 receiving yards last season. This performance cemented him as the dynamic, playmaking slant receiver to round out the team’s receiving core. Though a prolific talent in his own right, Kirk has had injury issues of his own, as he has missed 14 games the past two years. His play will be equally important for the Texans, who need to improve an abysmal offense from 2022.

Aside from Kirk, the Texans have added WR Braxton Berrios. Berrios wrapped up last season with not a single reception to his name due to an ACL tear in his left knee. Outside of this minor blip, he’s been a consistent third option on punt returns. Rico on Saavy Engaged Head Coach DeMeco Ryans has faith in Berrios’ skills. He continued, “Berrios has proven that he could be a highly effective punt returner in this league. Bears DC, and former linebacker, Sean Ryans highlighted Berrios’ elite versatility. In what should be a returner’s dream debut season, I expect him to make big plays on specials and as a slot receiver.

The Texans signed Justin Watson. Coach Ryans referred to him as “one of the most consistent guys in the league,” praising his speed and high football IQ. To say that Ryans was fired up to add Watson is an understatement. He continued, “He definitely plays fast, plays the game the right way, so I’m really excited to bring him aboard.” The additions of Watson and Berrios are meant to give the team more depth at the position and foster competition in the wide receiver room as well.

By making these changes, the Texans hope to find a new rhythm on offense. Look for the WR room to undergo a revolution this year. The team’s committed to building emerging talent and getting the most out of their new signings. League sources indicate that the team is preparing to leverage their draft picks to add further depth to this critical position.
