Texans Navigate Legal Issues with Ward and Sign Mills for Safety Depth

The Houston Texans are grappling with legal troubles surrounding safety Jimmie Ward while simultaneously bolstering their roster with the signing of veteran safety Jalen Mills. Thursday night Ward became the second member of Congress to be arrested in two months. He was released from jail on Friday after spending the night in custody and posting $30,000 bail. His latest legal woes started with his second arrest. This occurred after a previous arrest on June 12, resulting in felony assault charges for a domestic incident involving a family member.

Authorities arrived on the scene after a woman made a call saying Ward had beaten, choked, and threatened her life. After this incident, Ward was found to have tested positive for alcohol, contrary to his initial release order, which led to his most recent arrest. The Texans’ general manager, Nick Caserio, and head coach, DeMeco Ryans, have indicated that they intend to let the legal process unfold before making further decisions regarding Ward’s future with the team.

Ward has served as a key cog on the Texans’ defense, starting in 91 games over his 115 career games played. His 59 career passes defended, eight interceptions and 450 tackles are a solid resumé for his career. He is, as of this writing, on the physically unable to perform list. This state of affairs is yet another layer stacked on the team’s deep safety concerns.

The Texans have done their best to assuage lingering concerns about Ward’s recurring availability and alleged conduct. Plus, they signed Jalen Mills, who could be a key veteran presence on the back end. Mills, a 2016 seventh-round selection of the Philadelphia Eagles, has built a success nine-year career in the NFL. With the New England Patriots, he signed a four-year, $24 million deal in 2021. Last year, he spent time with the New York Jets as well.

Mills’ addition is expected to provide stability and depth to the Texans’ safety position as they navigate the ongoing situation with Ward. His extensive experience in high-pressure environments will be beneficial for a team that is looking to solidify its defense amid uncertainty.
