Consequently, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, the safety for the Houston Texans, is angling to make his return. Head coach DeMeco Ryans expects him to be “good to go for Week 1.” After a month-long recovery from a knee injury sustained in a scrimmage, Gardner-Johnson is primed to return to the gridiron. On August 7, Gardner-Johnson injured his knee while attempting to tackle his then-teammate, John Metchie III. That’s exactly what occurred during a July scrimmage at the picturesque Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia. At first, the injury looked bad, leading many to wonder how it would shape his season. Fortunately, further medical evaluations showed no structural damage to his ACL, providing hope for a much less grim recovery period.
After having been dinged up for close to a month, Gardner-Johnson is expected to start getting back on the practice field during the week of September 1. That’s why his return is even more critical. He’s looking to improve a secondary that was one of the best last year, finishing second in the league for interceptions.
Acquired by the Texans in March in exchange for left guard Kenyon Green, Gardner-Johnson brings valuable experience to the team. Green was the Texans first round pick last year, making this trade even more monumental. Gardner-Johnson’s new running mates will be All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., and former five-star safety Calen Bullock. Together, they’re poised to rejuvenate the Texans’ secondary.
Gardner-Johnson finished his collegiate career at Louisville before making the jump to the pros. His ability to read plays and create turnovers will be critical as he assumes a starting position in the Texans’ secondary.
