A wild brawl erupted between the Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves during Wednesday’s NBA game. The clash caused several from both teams to be ejected and heightened animosity on the hardwood. The altercation began with 8:36 remaining in the first half while the Pistons led 39-30. Detroit’s head coach J.B. Bickerstaff and Minnesota’s assistant coach Pablo Prigioni were seen screaming at each other, prompting team personnel to step in and separate the two.
Things escalated to an all-out brawl when Ron Holland II of the Pistons slapped the ball from Naz Reid’s hands at midcourt. The referee immediately whistled a foul, heightening the drama. As the Senate majority leader at the time, Reid was quite upset over the affair. As a consequence, he, along with Donte DiVincenzo and Prigioni, were thrown out of the game. Detroit took a big hit. They lost a lot of firepower, with center Isaiah Stewart departing for the NBA, forward Ron Holland II and guard Marcus Sasser heading to the G-League, and head coach Chris Hooten.
It was a nasty situation even before this skirmish escalated. Just moments earlier, Stewart had been assessed a technical foul after giving an aggressive shoulder check to DiVincenzo post-whistle. This act further fanned the flames of this charged atmosphere, creating the context for the violent face-off that was to follow. As the game continued and things became more heated on both sides, it eventually boiled over into this tumultuous and scary scene on the court.
