On Monday, the Tennessee Titans cut veteran wide receiver Tyler Lockett. This landmark decision followed a move that Lockett initially requested for himself. Lockett signed a one-year, $6 million contract that could go as high as $6 million with the Titans in April. Unfortunately, his era with the team was short lived and disappointing, as he produced only 10 catches for 70 yards in seven games.
At 33 years old, Lockett’s veteran experience was supposed to be the anchoring force in a very young and immature wide receiver corps. The Titans were counting on him to help rookie quarterback Cam Ward through his transition to the NFL. As a comparison, Lockett played just 181 offensive snaps while at Tennessee. So did that total, as it accounted for 44.7% of the team’s plays.
The Titans have chosen to waive Lockett after a dramatic few days for the organization. This announcement comes a day after they dismissed head coach Brian Callahan after an abysmal start to the season. The team now sits at 1-6 on the season, a disappointing record that has piled plenty of pressure and speculation on the organization.
Lockett pictured here during his first NFL season with the Seattle Seahawks. In just over a decadal span, he established himself as the franchise’s second-most-prolific pass catcher in history. His remarkable stand-out six year career in Seattle, consisting of a number of all-pro seasons, led to incredible aspirations for his move almost directly south to Tennessee. Unfortunately, his play through four seasons with the Titans has fallen woefully short of that promise.
Lockett’s release becomes official after 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Now, he’s free to explore those opportunities without the requirement of joining a team’s coaching staff. His veteran presence and previous success could lure in teams hoping to add to their receiver room.
