Tennessee Titans Bolster Roster with Strategic Signings Amid Offseason Changes

The Tennessee Titans have flown under the radar with their start to the offseason. They’re committed to fortifying their attack and their redoubt. The team has recently been joined by some pretty amazing new additions! They added Jones and Carter to the DL and OLB rooms with one-year contracts. These moves are meant to plug holes left by free agent defections and a down year in 2021. They’re looking to improve on their defensive side of play and bolster an already stout offensive attack.

Defensive Reinforcements

The Titans need to work on their defense. They added Dre’Mont Jones and Lorenzo Carter to shore up a defense that was pitiful at times last season. The Titans averaged only 1.9 sacks per game, the third-worst in the league, and no player on their roster has achieved a double-digit sack season. Harold Landry III leaving for the New England Patriots represents nine sacks walking out the door. This sudden move disproportionately underscores the critical need for protection.

The other key additions for the team were bringing safety Xavier Woods and inside linebacker Cody Barton to the fold. These players have a combined 7-24 record as starters. They’re still both expected to bring much-needed experience and depth to a defense that badly needs it. It’s no secret that the Titans are trying to improve their defensive ranking overall with these signings.

Offensive Line and Receiving Corps Strengthened

On the offensive side, the Titans have put a lot of resources into keeping their quarterback safe and giving him more weapons. Left tackle Dan Moore Jr. was signed to a four-year, $82 million contract, demonstrating Tennessee's commitment to solidifying their offensive line. Right guard Kevin Zeitler was signed on a one-year, $9 million contract—making the team’s offensive line even stronger.

At receiver, the Titans signed free agent Van Jefferson, most recently of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Jefferson opened 12 of 17 games last season and will bolster the starter’s depth sorely needed. The wideout room is headlined by Calvin Ridley who made 64 receptions for 1,017 yards last year. Part of that is because Ridley is the only other proven receiving option on the roster. This underscores just how important Jefferson’s role is as an enabler to the passing game.

Quarterback Dynamics and Draft Outlook

Tennessee signed Brandon Allen to improve their quarterback competition. He carries significant institutional knowledge with him, having worked alongside offensive chief Brian Callahan during their time together at the Cincinnati Bengals. Allen's experience is anticipated to bring depth and versatility to the quarterback position as he works under Callahan's offensive system.

After the NFL trade with Miami, the Titans now have the No. 35 overall pick in the second round. This selection provides Tennessee with a great opportunity to add a key playmaker to their roster. They’ll still have to target emerging talent to fill some remaining needs on offense and defense.
