Tim Tector, Ireland’s promising opening batter, expressed his excitement at sharing the crease with his older brother, Harry Tector, during the ongoing series against Bangladesh. The siblings, who have played together in both club and domestic cricket, recently showcased their skills in the international arena, solidifying their bond and talent as key players for the Irish team.
In their most recent fixture, Tim scored 38 runs and Harry 11 runs in the pair’s second match against Bangladesh. Unfortunately for Ireland, this was not to be their day, as they found themselves on the losing side by four wickets. Although their tournament performances had been perfect, the team alone had beaten Bangladesh on their tournament debut. Harry was not out on 69 and Tim made 39 runs as part of the winning scorecard.
Heinrich Malan, Ireland’s head coach, was appreciative of the unique role the Tector brothers provide in the squad. He referred to them as “the two big players.” He too hoped they would have no choice but to keep making their family proud and contribute to advancing the team to the next round.
When we first announced this series, we were transparent that it’s all leading up to our T20 World Cup appearance, Malan noted. “We obviously haven’t had the amount of cricket that we would have wanted throughout the year, but that’s in the past.”
The family legacy of the Tector brothers goes far beyond their shared performances on the field. Their younger sister, Alice, has recently come on board with the women’s team. At the same time, their eldest sibling, Jack, was skippering the Under-19s at a World Cup. This parental involvement has helped to cultivate an intense passion for the sport within the brothers.
Tim shared his thoughts on playing alongside Harry, stating, “It’s obviously very cool batting with Harry out there. We’ve done it for quite a while now in our club stuff and in our domestic stuff at home, so it didn’t feel that different batting with him.”
He further elaborated on their family dynamic in cricket: “We’ve all played in the same club pretty much throughout our journey, and we all love it. Maybe it’s rare that every family member loves playing the same sport, but it’s great that we all get along with it, and we all love playing it.”
The Tector brothers are bound to amaze all over again. They’re coming to give Ireland a chance of a first ever win against an ICC Full Member in Asia. A victory would be a special landmark moment for Ireland’s men’s team.
Tim also addressed the conditions they faced in the second match, noting, “The pitch might be slightly drier without the dew, but we’ll have to wait and see.”
As England prepare for their next contest, Malan highlighted the need to give players the freedom to play what they see. “The T20 game has evolved massively over the last little period and I think we’ve identified that we want to free our players up to go out there and express themselves and I think we’ve seen that in the last week,” he said.
