Taysom Hill’s incredible return for the New Orleans Saints against the New York Giants in their last game. This was after he’d been off the field for almost nine months from multiple knee catastrophes. His on-field role was limited, Hill’s presence was felt as he actively engaged with fans and contributed to the team’s dynamics. In Kellen Moore’s first game as Offensive Coordinator, Kellen has let us know that Hill’s role is only going to get bigger as he recovers and adjusts.
Hill, 35, had not played since he was carted off the field. This injury from the New Orleans Saints vs. Los Angeles Rams 12/2/24 game. We would feel confident saying that going into the 2025 season but the injury did bring that future into question. Hill expressed doubt that he would step onto the field. “The reality is I’ve had three days of practice with his coaching staff and they’ve had three days of practice with me,” Hill said regarding his adjustment to the team’s current strategies.
In fact, Hill showed that he hasn’t lost a beat despite the three-year hiatus. He was able to convert two massive third downs in that game—one with a 2-yard run and another on a 19-yard completion to Juwan Johnson on third-and-2. This performance highlighted his determination and skill to leave an impact even after spending the last five months in rehab.
Career Hill has suffered extensive injuries during his career, including Lisfranc injuries in both feet, a chest injury, and knee injuries. That along with his consistent overall war with injuries has left many thinking about how long he’ll last in the sport. He has shown to be a great weapon for the Saints’ offense. Despite all that, he’s still the team leader in rushing touchdowns—with six!
As he took the field against the Giants, Hill led the fans in the pregame “Who Dat” chant, marking a triumphant return after an arduous rehabilitation journey. Coach Moore noted that Hill was available to serve as a backup quarterback if needed, highlighting his versatility within the team. “Yeah, he’s done it plenty of times in his career,” Moore remarked when discussing Hill’s potential roles.
Hill was a regular on the field through all practices this summer. That experience has prepared him to take on a new, expanded role on the team this season. He worked closely with the quarterbacks and has focused on maintaining his skill set, even while being placed on the physically unable to perform list at the beginning of training camp in July. “Everyone’s still learning through this process. I think it’ll be one of those things that just evolves through time,” Hill said about his ongoing adaptation to the team’s strategies.
Foster Moreau, another key player on the team, expressed solidarity with Hill’s challenges, stating, “It’s brutal, because… rehab is just pain dosing.” Moreau recognized all of the tough work that goes into recovery but expressed appreciation for being in their respective positions in the world of sport.
