Sussex’s Unadkat Shines in Championship Clash Against Yorkshire

Jaydev Unadkat then produced one of the great spells. His tireless purpose nearly carried Sussex home to victory over Yorkshire in their last Championship match. This was just Unadkat’s second outing of the 2025 season. Local to the scene, Green made a lasting impact by taking 3 for 36.

That picture was played out at Headingley, where bowling bowlers put the finishing touches on to bowl Yorkshire out and plunge them into a dangerous position. Unadkat’s standout performance included the pivotal wicket of Jonny Bairstow, whom he bowled through the gate with a delivery that demonstrated both precision and skill. He quickly followed this up with another vital wicket, snaring Matthew Revis, who had passed on a ball way outside off stump.

Unadkat’s contribution was ably supported by Fynn Hudson-Prentice, who picked up three wickets in the innings to follow Unadkat’s lead. Together, the pair created a dangerous combination that left Yorkshire reeling in their innings from the start.

“It was a disciplined bowling performance by our bowling unit and we got our rewards later on,” Unadkat remarked after the day’s play. “We then lost a couple more wickets than we would have liked but I still feel we are in a good position.”

As the game went on, Yorkshire just couldn’t get anything going, ruined by the conditions and a masterclass in bowling plans from Sussex. Even more significant were the conditions at Headingley. Unadkat added that the tremendous wind, that made life so difficult on ball control, did help create movement off the pitch.

The wind did a little bit to make the ball move around some but overall it’s a good hitter’s ballpark,” he said. We’ve been missing healthy, strong partnerships in the past few red-ball matches and that’s what has been killing us.

The secret of Sussex’s success with the ball can be found in the individual performances so far. Their cohesive unit approach is just as important to their success. Everyone played their part and kept the pressure on Yorkshire’s top order, making anything close to a lapse in concentration count.

With Sussex going into the second phase of the game on the front foot, they are in an excellent position. Following some brilliant bowling effort, Kent have set Yorkshire a pretty testing target to chase down. The ultimate result will be determined primarily by their success at turning this early lead into a firm, sizable victory.
