Surrey then recorded an emphatic nine-wicket victory over Durham at The Oval with a breathtaking display from Danni Wyatt-Hodge. Wyatt-Hodge’s powerful knock of 74 not out from 36 balls led her team to a seven-wicket victory with 23 balls to spare. Youth player Kira Chathli made major contributions, ending the match with an impressive 19 not out off just 13 balls.
Durham though had a difficult start when the game opened up. England opener Emma Lamb quickly followed, falling to Issy Wong in the first over, bowled out for just five runs. Surrey’s bowlers quickly got their side out of a perilous early loss and provided a strong start. This allowed Wyatt-Hodge and Chathli to create a powerful, productive partnership that carried the pair to victory.
MacDonald-Gay, reflecting on the match, noted, “It definitely is a big win. We bowled and fielded really well as a team and then Danni and Bry smashed it and got us over the line.”
In an equally exciting game, Lancashire Thunder narrowly defeated Bears by five runs. Only one player had a double impact, Tara Norris starred as both batter and bowler. Norris proved her all-around talent, scoring an unbeaten 33 and taking three wickets for 25 runs. Natasha Wraith shone with her knock of 57 not out off 36 balls.
Ailsa Lister had made 36 runs before being bowled out leg before wicket (lbw) to Hannah Baker. King then scored a quick 21 runs made to it just 5 balls before being held out by Millie Taylor at deep mid-wicket. The game was close throughout, and it was Thunder who held on to defend their score.
Ellie Threlkeld expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “We have had a couple of tough ones in the last couple of games, so to get a win on the board is brilliant and we are right back in the mixer.”
From the opening match, both teams showed amazing skill and grit. For Surrey, Wyatt-Hodge’s remarkable performance alongside Charis Pavely’s contribution of 27 runs proved pivotal.
Parade made a late push with Katherine Fraser taking the control in the final third of their innings. She hit the last ball for six, giving her team an emphatic win. MacDonald-Gay highlighted the synergy between Wyatt-Hodge and Bry as particularly challenging for opponents: “They are very good players who work really well together because they are different and they score in different areas, so it must be really tricky to bowl to them as a pair.”
