Surrey crushed Yorkshire by an innings and 73 runs in their last County Championship match. Their return engagement saw the Taipans win decidedly, by an innings and 28 runs, at the Kia Oval. This achievement further cements Surrey’s breathtaking supremacy and continues their chase for a fourth straight title. Following this victory, Surrey moved up to second place in the Division One table, with Nottinghamshire now topping the table.
Yorkshire never really got going in either innings, managing just 255 runs in their first innings, and 229 in their second. Surrey’s batting was hugely powerful, staking claim to a massive 512 runs in their innings. Such an impressive achievement naturally created a high bar for Yorkshire to set.
Jonny Bairstow excelled for Yorkshire, making 77 runs. His goal was to put the team in a good position to build a total that would be competitive. His dismissal proved pivotal. Ryan Patel bowled Bairstow out in his fourth and final over. What a time to get your first wicket of the season, just before Surrey are about to take a second new ball!
Surrey’s bowling attack was just as ruthless, with Jordan Clark as Surrey’s chief destroyer, taking four for 45. Tom Lawes played a big part taking three wickets for 47 runs. Lawes then got Matthew Revis dismissed, lbw for a mere 13 runs and putting Yorkshire in despair. Ben Coad had a disappointing end, edging through to Jordan Clark without scoring.
Despite several mid-match miscues, Surrey never lost their grasp of the game. One significant point was Jason Roy making a meal of a low catch off Jordan Thompson at slip. They’ve produced a stunning run, winning 18 out of their last 24 title matches. This success has been achieved at the Kia Oval since the start of the 2022 season.
This victory is part of another amazing story of Surrey’s relentless push towards championship glory. After an unbeaten start to the season, they are squarely on track to contend for yet another title. The team has an infectious energy and excitement that is carrying momentum. They should build on that success and continue to move in the right direction over the next few matches.
