Suns Secure Promising Center Mark Williams from Hornets

The Phoenix Suns opened the offseason with a bang, trading for Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams. This is a big trade right before this year’s NBA draft. This deal deepens Phoenix’s center spot following the Deandre Ayton trade earlier in the week. They’re focused on improving their roster this offseason.

The Suns are sending the 29th overall pick from Wednesday night’s NBA draft to the Hornets. They’re even throwing in a first-round pick for 2029 in the trade. This future pick is the most favorable of Cleveland Cavaliers, Utah Jazz and Minnesota Timberwolves future picks. It has a top-five protection clause stuck on it like chewing gum on the sidewalk.

Mark Williams, a 7-foot athletic big man, has shown some pretty great flashes in his short time as a Hornet. That all changed this past season, as he truly blossomed, averaging 15.3 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. His phenomenal all around game speaks to how impactful he has been on both sides of the floor. Williams has 44 games under his belt this season, a career high. This incredible achievement comes after being chosen 30th overall in the first round of the 2022 NBA Draft.

Injuries have hindered Williams’ progress throughout his career. His performance this past season suggests he is on an upward trajectory. He’ll be eligible for a contract extension this upcoming summer. The Suns are wishing on a star that he can continue to maintain his high level of play and improved health longterm.

It would be one of the biggest moves the Suns could make to trade for Williams. This move continues their recent draft night trend, as they selected center Khaman Maluach. This two-pronged strategy is designed to shore up their frontcourt depth as they enter a season that promises to be more competitive than past years.

Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith weighed in on the Suns’ strategy during draft night, highlighting the significance of acquiring both Williams and Maluach for their long-term plans.
