Sunderland preparing for an extra charged Tyne-Wear derby. They proudly hold on to seven players who will be going to the AFCON as representatives of their nations. Under the management of Regis Le Bris, the club has decided to keep these key players available for the crucial match against their local rivals. Their decision is an important, strategic step to improve their odds in winning the derby, set for early January.
Reinildo Mandava is the other sustained footballer. This season, he’s played a total of 843 minutes as a defensive midfield anchor for Sunderland. Sunderland’s seven stars on their way to AFCON have played a considerable role in the Black Cats’ opening campaign. Collectively, they’ve logged a combined total of 3,553 minutes on the pitch.
Noah Sadiki, a midfielder from Congo, has seen consistent action on the field for Sunderland. Of note, he has played the full 90 in every Premier League match this term. His contributions have been important, if somewhat unsung, as the team looks to build momentum going into the derby. Chemsdine Talbi, the fast winger from Morocco, has impressed by contributing in every Premier League game this season. His reliability has made him a key cog for the team.
The squad just recently triumphed in a combative 3-2 win over Bournemouth. Aston Villa forward Bertrand Traore made waves by scoring one of the goals in a thrilling contest. Regardless though, his performance only further hammers home his importance to Sunderland’s attacking strategy as they continue to prepare for the impending derby.
All the contenders for the AFCON will not be leaving. Yoanne Wissa has been released from the DR Congo squad and will instead stay with Sunderland during January. Eddie Howe, Sunderland’s head coach, confirmed that Wissa is back in full training and will soon rejoin the team’s activities.
Regis Le Bris faces a challenging task as he prepares his squad for the derby with both local pride and league standings on the line. Keeping these seven players for the second leg demonstrates a focus on putting together a strong starting eleven in what could be a make or break lineup.
