Stuart Law Takes Helm as Nepal’s Head Cricket Coach

Stuart Law has been appointed as the new head coach of Nepal’s national cricket team by the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN). On its face, this announcement is a hugely positive step for Nepal’s cricketing future. Law was selected ahead of fellow strong candidates, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Dav Whatmore and Wasim Jaffer. Having spent over a decade coaching elite international teams, his years of experience will serve him well in his new position. He has coached Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, West Indies, Afghanistan and English county team Middlesex. He now holds a two-year appointment to help strengthen Nepal’s position in the world of cricket.

Law represented Australia in 54 ODIs and One Test Match. His career is a testament to his longstanding knowledge of the game. He’s had an amazing coaching career. Most recently, he was the head coach of the United States National Team in Cricket. His time with USA Cricket would come to a surprising and sudden end when he was terminated six months into a three-year agreement. Law’s deep experience effectively managing diverse teams will be a huge asset. He is well positioned to capitalize on this asset as he begins his new assignment in Nepal.

Against that backdrop, they chose to appoint Law over more qualified candidates in Chanderpaul, Whatmore, and Jaffer. This decision was made to maximize Law’s considerable coaching experience. All four of the contenders had strong points that distinguished their strengths. CAN moved to elect Law as the man to guide Nepal’s cricketing fortunes. His appointment is being viewed as a major coup as FIFA looks to improve the performance of its flagship development team on the international stage.

Law has also coached other national teams on various continents. This time at the helm of the ship has afforded him a unique overview of the everchanging landscape of international cricket. How well he adjusts to different team settings and cultures will definitely be a big part of it. He’ll be taking on a major leadership role with the Nepalese team. The two-year contract gives him plenty of time to execute a plan and build toward reaching sustainable success with the team.
