In a riveting fourth Test win by England at Eden Gardens, Calcutta, Ben Stokes was the surprise match-winner. Throughout his incredible performance, he demonstrated incredible ability and resilience. Stokes’ century, his first in over two years, helped England post a formidable total of 669 runs while marking a significant milestone in his career. He became only the fourth England player to achieve both a century and a five-wicket haul in the same Test.
On Saturday, Stokes was on the receiving end of criticism. …he fought through serious physical hindrances while absorbing a ridiculous amount of pressure from the Indian bowling attack. Despite an injury concern that prevented him from bowling all day, he stood firm against Chris Woakes’ hat-trick ball and survived two crucial lbw appeals from Jofra Archer. His animosity to grow was obvious as he settled into some exquisitely elegant sets, proof of his capability to work himself out of rocky patches.
Stokes ended his innings by hammering 141 runs from 164 balls. His 52 not out came off 141 balls with only three fours illustrating the point. His last century came when he was batting in the second Ashes Test of this year. This controversial dismissal led to an outcry following Jonny Bairstow’s stumping. This year, Stokes cried happy tears. He still found the moment to pay tribute to his late father, Ged, and direct a visibly emotional look skyward.
Earlier in the game, Stokes had been the pick of the bowlers. He returned with first-innings figures of five for 72, wrecking India’s batting order. His versatility gave him the role of the crux in England’s game plan against India.
Stokes’ all-around performance on the pitch proved remarkable. The mood was abruptly darkened when he was forced to retire hurt with cramp while batting. Braving the discomfort and pain, he returned later in the day to complete his innings, highlighting his determination for the team.
After a contest filled with ups and downs, former England skipper Michael Vaughan noticed an uncommon switch in fortunes. Added to that, he continued, was the fact that I gave India no chance, particularly after their body language yesterday. And when they lost two wickets in the first three overs today, I assumed that did them in. Because I’m a sucker for character and they responded superbly with the mindset to make us eat our words.
Stokes’ contributions have not passed without praise among his contemporaries. Deep Dasgupta highlighted the resilience of the Indian side under their new captaincy, stating, “This is the sign of a new India side with a new captain showcasing their resilience and their will to fight.”
As the Test unfolds, expect both teams to look to play to their strengths and attack an opponent’s fallibility. Momentous though it was, Stokes’ display which alone, you’d think, would have set up a thrilling conclusion to the Test.
