Steven Gerrard has stepped down from his role as the head coach of Al Ettifaq by mutual consent. The former Liverpool legend had been at the helm of the Saudi Arabian club for 18 months. Despite a promising start, Al Ettifaq's performance this season has been underwhelming, with the team securing just five wins in 17 league games. The decision to part ways follows a 2-2 draw against Al Wehda FC, who are currently second-bottom in the standings.
Gerrard's initial season with Al Ettifaq saw him guide the team to a respectable sixth-place finish. However, this campaign has proven challenging, with the club winning only twice in their last 14 league outings. Despite significant backing from the club, including high-profile signings such as Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Demarai Gray, the team's form has not met expectations.
Gerrard's managerial career has been marked by highs and lows. He famously led Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade in 2021. Following this achievement, he took charge of Aston Villa in November 2021 but was dismissed after securing just 13 wins from 40 games. His tenure at Al Ettifaq began in July 2023, and in January 2024, he signed a two-year contract extension intended to keep him at the club until 2027.
Currently positioned 12th in the 18-team Saudi Pro League, Al Ettifaq find themselves only five points above the relegation zone. The club's leadership and Gerrard reached a mutual agreement to end his contract early, marking his departure from what has been his third managerial role since retiring from playing in 2016. Assistant coach Michael Beale is also anticipated to leave alongside Gerrard.
