Steelers Set to Make History with First-Ever NFL Regular-Season Game in Ireland

The National Football League (NFL) has announced that history will be made in the 2025 season with the first-ever regular-season game in Ireland. The Pittsburgh Steelers have been designated as the home team for this landmark event, which will take place at Croke Park, Ireland's largest stadium and the heart of the Gaelic Athletic Association. This game marks a significant moment in the NFL's international expansion efforts and is expected to captivate a passionate Irish fan base.

The Steelers have a storied history of international play, having previously competed in a 2013 game against the Minnesota Vikings at Wembley Stadium in London. Additionally, they played a preseason match against the Chicago Bears in Ireland back in 1997. The team's deep-rooted connections to Ireland are evident, as the Rooney family, who own the Steelers, emigrated from Ireland to Pittsburgh. Former team president Dan M. Rooney even served as the U.S. ambassador to Ireland from 2009 to 2012.

Dan Rooney, the Steelers' director of business development and strategy, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming game.

"The Terrible Towels will certainly make the trip across the pond to Croke Park," – Dan Rooney

The NFL's commitment to global growth is underscored by this historic event. College football's success in Ireland influenced the decision to host a game at Croke Park, further highlighting the country's appetite for American football. Peter O'Reilly, a key figure in the NFL's international initiatives, emphasized the importance of expanding football globally.

"We are delighted to officially bring a regular season NFL game to Ireland as part of our 2025 International Games slate," – Peter O'Reilly

"We want to see all levels of football grow. It all contributes," – Peter O'Reilly

For the Steelers, this game represents more than just an international fixture; it is an opportunity to connect with their Irish roots and a growing fan base. Art Rooney II noted the significance of this occasion.

"The opportunity for the Pittsburgh Steelers to play in Ireland is truly special, not only because of the Rooney family history there, but also to play in front of the growing number of Steelers fans in Ireland," – Art Rooney II
