The Pittsburgh Steelers are allegedly prepared to sign Green Bay Packers wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling. He was cut only a day after signing an injury settlement with the San Francisco 49ers. Valdes-Scantling, a talented player known for his speed and receiving ability, has had a varied career spanning multiple teams in the NFL.
Valdes-Scantling was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Most recently, he signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Seattle Seahawks in free agency. He was signed to the Steelers’ practice squad on August 28. Just a few days later, on September 3, he was called up to the active roster. His tenure with the 49ers came to an abrupt and surprising end. On October 17, they put him on injured reserve because of a calf injury.
Throughout his NFL career Valdes-Scantling has shown that he can be an impactful offensive weapon. He played two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, before his run with the Niners. In that context, his performance in Green Bay was astoundingly exceptional. In 2020, he scored 13 touchdowns, leading the league in the process while pacing all NFL pass catchers with a ridiculous 20.9 yards per reception.
Before joining the Green Bay Packers and becoming a Super Bowl champion, Valdes-Scantling had a time with the New Orleans Saints. In his two seasons there, he started eight games. During his brief NFL career, he appeared in six games for the Buffalo Bills, emphasizing the versatility provided by playing on multiple teams in the league.
Injuries have contributed to Valdes-Scantling’s recent performance. His career-high six touchdown receptions in a single season are indicative of the huge impact he could have on the field when healthy. His eventual signing by the Steelers shows just how highly they think of his potential to improve their offense in the deep future.
The Steelers are looking to improve their receiving corps with Valdes-Scantling’s versatility and experience. His addition is timely, as the team has tried to find its footing amidst the storm of the ongoing season.
