The San Antonio Spurs will have their work cut out for them in the season opener taking on the Dallas Mavericks this Wednesday. Forward Jeremy Sochan will be out after he sprained his left wrist. Sochan was recovering from a right calf strain. This injury follows on from him having suffered that injury while training with the Polish national team in August.
It’s one of those unfortunate ones, an injury that happened during a 5-on-5 drill Wednesday, as the rookie was finally starting to regain his form. The dynamic young forward went to extraordinary lengths to get back from his calf niggle. That injury had kept him out for almost a year. Though facing this discouraging blow, the Spurs are optimistic that Sochan will be back on the court in no time.
Sochan, 20, peaked last season, averaging 11.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.4 assists across 54 games. His uniqueness on both ends of the floor were inherently valuable to the Spurs, so they’ve continued bringing him along slowly. He will be sorely missed, as they suddenly shift their new campaign into high gear.
So, the rebuilding team finds itself playing musical chairs with its lineup as it continues to react and adapt to Sochan’s new injury. Early indications have him maybe being out just a couple of games, though. It’s obvious the La Tech coaching staff is taking a conservative approach to his injury recovery. For these reasons, they want to make sure that Sochan comes back at full strength before dealing with other potential traps.
The Spurs are preparing for their season opener. In Sochan’s absence, they’ll have to look for other players to take a leadership role and impact the game. What his absence will impact On the court, replacing his versatility and skill set won’t be very easy. The group remains optimistic about its depth and talent.
