The 2025 Met Gala brought together some of the best arts and athletics. This year’s theme was a brilliant, magnetic expression of Black excellence, culture and fashion. This year’s event, themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” showcased the significant contributions of Black fashion in the industry. The gala was set to take place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on May 5, 2025. It attracted a dynamic array of key change-makers spanning multiple sectors.
NBA superstar LeBron James was listed as the honorary chair for the evening — though he was, perhaps ironically, the most visible absence for the event. His role highlighted the growing crossover between sports and fashion, a movement that has gained momentum over the past few years. From Lewis Hamilton’s special musical seder to James Cordon’s outrageous opening, we look back at the highlights. He created a powerful message through his sartorial choices, clearly showing us he was all in on this year’s theme.
The committee was star-studded with athletes like Angel Reese, Sha’Carri Richardson, Simone Biles, and Jonathan Owens on the host committee. Their presence highlighted the solid showing of sports stars at this year’s Met Gala. Then Biles and Owens shocked everyone when they stepped onto the red carpet together. Their stunning outfits combined with how authentically one another they cheered one another’s success stole the spotlight and were magnetic.
Saquon Barkley made a grand entrance at the gala, walking in at the same time as fellow athletes turned activists like Hamilton and Breanna Stewart. Their attendance was an indication of the rising prominence of athletes even at high-profile non-sports events such as the Met Gala. Transforming the event into a who’s-who of sports icons that night was NFL star Joe Burrow.
The event not only celebrated fashion but provided a platform for athletes to showcase their personal styles and promote their causes. With each clip, the appearance of sports’ biggest stars helped to establish the overarching narrative that athleticism and artistry are more connected than ever before, especially in today’s culture.
