Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis, the dynamic duo known as the ‘Special Ks,’ are set to reunite for doubles competition at the 2025 Australian Open. This marks an eagerly awaited comeback for the pair, who previously lifted the title together in 2022 by defeating fellow Australians Max Purcell and Matt Ebden in a thrilling final.
Both players will benefit from a protected singles ranking, allowing them to compete at a high level despite recent challenges. Kyrgios, who is a former world No. 77, holds a protected singles ranking of 21. Meanwhile, Kokkinakis boasts a protected singles ranking of 13, as he prepares for his return to competitive tennis.
Kokkinakis is gearing up to make his comeback at the Brisbane International on December 29. He has faced numerous physical challenges over the last two years, including knee, wrist, and foot injuries, limiting him to just one competitive match during that time. Kyrgios expressed optimism about Kokkinakis's return, stating, “It’s been a long time coming. I think he’s been ready for a while now to play, but he wanted to make sure he’s really ready before he steps back, so hopefully he can stay healthy.”
The duo’s previous run at the Australian Open was notable not only for their victory but also for the electrifying atmosphere they created during their late-night matches. Their matches became some of the tournament’s biggest draws, captivating fans with a blend of skill and entertainment that left a lasting impression.
Kyrgios acknowledged the potential challenges ahead, particularly regarding scheduling and fatigue. He remarked, “If you have a big five-setter, with all due respect, the last thing you want to do is go out and play doubles the next day, but we’ll play it by ear and see how it goes.”
Kokkinakis echoed this sentiment while expressing enthusiasm for their upcoming participation. He said, “Everyone loved it last time, we loved it, it was so much fun.” He added, “It’s going to be great for tennis, great for fans in Australia, fans all over the world.”
