Southern Brave battled hard against Birmingham Phoenix and won by 15 runs. The fiery contest hosted in the Utilita Bowl. This win not only highlighted the team’s strong performance but set a record with an attendance of 11,167 for a women’s Hundred match. An encounter featuring outstanding performances on both sides, most of all from Southern Brave’s Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Sophie Devine.
Southern Brave started the match by batting first. They had to defend 139 runs off 100 balls at the Sonargaon Cricket Stadium in Dhaka. Danni Wyatt-Hodge proved to be the star performance, scoring 59 runs off 39 balls and really solidifying the innings. Her belligerent batting provided impetus right from the start and helped her side set a very competitive total on the board.
Chasing a steep target of 173, Birmingham Phoenix never got into their groove in response. In this effort, despite a fighting innings from Sterre Kalis who scored 44 runs off 34 balls, they were unable to chase the target down. Ellyse Perry added 26 runs, but in the end, Birmingham Phoenix were bowled out for just 124 runs in 99 balls.
Sophie Devine was phenomenal, not just with the bat but with the ball. She removed chief destroyers Jones for 20 and Ailsa Lister for the golden duck. In addition, Devine completed an outstanding run-out to dismiss Megan Schutt, who scored just seven runs. Her multi-faceted performance was key in limiting Birmingham Phoenix’s boundaries.
To add to the team’s bowling glory, Lauren Bell had an absolutely incredible day with the ball, taking three wickets for only 17 runs. Her accurate bowling ensured high-octane pressure was provided from the start to the Birmingham Phoenix batting order. It was this performance that proved essential to clinch victory for Southern Brave.
As the match concluded, the Southern Brave players celebrated their hard-earned victory while Birmingham Phoenix reflected on their missed opportunities. The match was a display of both personal genius and the team fortitude that underlined Southern Brave’s flexible selection.
